What the New Texas SNAP Rules Mean for Our Plano Neighbors (And How We Can Help)

If you or someone you know relies on SNAP benefits (the Lone Star Card) to put food on the table, you've probably heard about the changes coming April 1st. And if you're feeling uncertain about what this means for your family's grocery budget, you're not alone.

Starting April 1, 2026, Texas SNAP benefits will no longer cover candy, soda, and certain sweetened items. While the goal is to promote healthier eating, we know this change adds another layer of complexity for the nearly 3.5 million Texans already navigating tight budgets—including many right here in Plano and Collin County.

At Table of Blessings, we believe every neighbor deserves access to nutritious food, dignity, and support during challenging times. Here's what you need to know about the new rules, and how our community can come together to help.

What's Changing with SNAP Benefits?

As of April 1st, SNAP recipients won't be able to purchase candy bars, chocolate-covered nuts or fruit, soda, energy drinks, or any sweetened beverage containing 5 grams or more of added sugar or artificial sweeteners. Chips, cookies, and similar snack items are also restricted.

The good news? All the nutritious staples your family needs are still fully covered. You can still buy fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, bread, cereals, and any beverage containing milk or milk alternatives like soy or almond milk. Fruit juices with more than 50% real juice by volume are also still allowed.

Why This Matters for North Texas Families

These policy changes come at a challenging time for our community. Texas leads the nation in hunger, with nearly 5.4 million Texans facing food insecurity—that's 1 in 6 people. Right here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, more than 744,000 neighbors don't know where their next meal will come from, including one in five children.

Meanwhile, food prices have risen 2.9% in the past year, with the biggest increases hitting exactly what families need most: meats, poultry, fish, eggs, and fresh produce have jumped 4-5%. When your grocery budget is already stretched thin, every dollar counts.
